WRF for Hurricanes Tutorial Overview
A WRF for Hurricanes Tutorial is being planned for 26 - 29 April 2011 and will be held at the NCAR Foothills Lab in Boulder, CO. This will be a four day joint venture shared by the NCAR MMM Division, NOAA/NCEP Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) and the Developmental Testbed Center.
The week will begin with one day of invited scientific talks on numerical weather prediction for tropical storms. These will cover a range of topics such as general and operational hurricane modeling, use of numerical guidance in hurricane forecasting, synoptic- and vortex-scale data assimilation, observations used in hurricane modeling, and model diagnostics. The intent of these talks is to provide the students with some perspective on the hurricane modeling systems that will serve the basis of this tutorial, i.e. NCAR's Advanced Hurricane Research WRF (AHW) and NCEP/EMC's operational Hurricane WRF (HWRF). Three-days of instruction on how use AHW and HWRF will follow the scientific talks, with instructional lectures and hands-on practical sessions. Participants can choose to attend only the first day of the tutorial (scientific overview) or the the entire four-day event.
Requirements
There are no requirements for attending the first day of the Tutorial, which will consist of a scientific overview on tropical storm numerical forecasting. However, the hands on tutorial portion will not provide basic WRF training; therefore all participants of the full tutorial must have demonstrable skill using and running WRF. Registration for the full tutorial will be limited to 40.
Registration & Payment
Registration for the first day of tutorial only, is free. The four-day tutorial registration fee is $300.00.
Seats are still available. There will be no refunds for cancellations made after 31 March 2011.
Upon registering, you will receive a confirmation that you have registered and that your acceptance is pending. Once you have been confirmed for the tutorial the credit card information that you entered into the registration will be charged. At this point another confirmation that you have been accepted to the tutorial class will be sent once payment has been received.
If you choose to pay by another option then while you have been accepted into the tutorial you will only be confirmed once we receive your payment. Participants on the waiting list will be notified as soon as possible regarding available space in the class.
If you have any questions or are unable to register please e-mail: workshop@ucar.edu.
Summary of Important Dates:
11 February 2011: Registration OpensAfter 31 March 2011: No refunds for cancellation
