Release Notes for GSI version 3.0

GSI code

  • This version GSI code is based on a revision of the GSI community trunk from Februry, 2011. The following is a list of new functions and changes included in the released code since the last release:
    • Improve current use of satellite data
    • SST updating and direct assimilation of radiances for SST
    • Update observation error statistic and background error statistics
    • Inclusion of ASCAT data
    • Include GOES wind thinning - improve QC and observation error specification for all satellite winds
    • Update ozone assimilation
    • Assimilating tropical storm pseudo sea-level pressure observations
    • Features to use hybrid ensemble/var data assimilation
    • Bundle to set state and control vector flexible
    • Inclusion of GSD cloud analysis scheme
    • Inclusion of PM2.5 data analysis with CMAQ background
    • Fix and improve GPS bending angle assimilation
    Besides, the community GSI code also contains community-friendly features, including
    • Updated configuration/compilation tools
    • Updated run script (under ./run)
    • New utilities (under ./util) to process BUFR/PrepBUFR file, read and plot diagnostic files, plot cast function and norm of the gradient, and plot analysis increment.
  • The version of the GSI has been tests with WRFV3.3 and WRFV3.2

  • The version of the GSI has been tests by DTC on multiple platforms, including:
    • IBM: xlf
    • LINUX: pgi
    • LINUX: Intel
    • Mac OSX: PGI
  • Several case tests were conducted on all supported platforms. Cycled tests with ARW and NAM NetCDF were conducted on Linux. Additional testing using AFWA testbed experiment and the EMC regression suite were conducted on IBM platform.
