2011 Workshop and Tutorial Overview

The First Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) Data Assimilation System workshop (June 28) and the Second GSI Community Tutorial (June 29 to July 1) will be offered at the NCAR Foothills Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado.

The workshop will be a one-day event on June 28, 2011. The objective of this workshop is to provide a pathway between operational centers and research community to communicate and share experience on:

  1. GSI development, implementation and future plans;
  2. New techniques and skills in data assimilation.
The workshop will include a few invited talks from major operational and research centers as well as a general section for community GSI and other data assimilation system users.

The GSI Community Tutorial, consisting of both lectures and hands-on practical sessions, will be held June 29-July 1, 2011 (with the last day for practical session only). The lecturers are invited from various GSI development/support teams including NCEP/EMC, NASA/GMAO, NOAA/GSD, NCAR/MMM and DTC. The practical sessions (optional) will provide essential skills to run GSI system with basic and advanced implementations.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of atmospheric science and numerical modeling, as well as Fortran and Unix, is required for the class. This tutorial will focus on running GSI in regional applications coupled with WRF-NMM or WRF-ARW. Some input data generated from WRF model will be used. The hands on tutorial will not provide basic WRF training; therefore all participants are encouraged to have knowledge on WRF model.

Available Spaces

There is no limitation on the registration for the workshop and/or tutorial lecture only option. However, due to the constraints of physical space and computers, registration for the tutorial with both lecture and practical sessions will be limited to 40.

Registration & Payment

Tutorial registration and workshop registration can be registered separately.

  • Workshop only: $55 (includes lunch and refreshments)
  • Full Tutorial (both lecture and practical sessions): $300 (includes lunch and refreshments for first two days; last day of the tutorial is an optional practical session)
  • Workshop and Tutorial: $325 (includes lunch and refreshments for three days)
  • Tutorial Lecture only (no practical session): $150 (includes lunch and refreshments)

No refunds for cancellations made after 24 May 2011.

For those who register for tutorial with both lecture and practical sessions, upon registering, you will receive a confirmation that you have registered and that your acceptance is pending. Once you have been confirmed for the tutorial, the credit card information that you entered into the registration will be charged. At this point another confirmation that you have been accepted to the tutorial class will be sent once payment has been received. If you choose to pay by another option, then while you have been accepted into the tutorial, you will only be confirmed once we receive your payment. If we do not receive your payment by 24 May then you will be removed from the tutorial and your spot given to someone on the waiting list. Participants on the waiting list will be notified as soon as possible regarding available space in the class.

For those who register for workshop or tutorial lecture only, upon registrering, you will receive a confirmation that you have registered. Since your acceptance is automatic, your credit card will be charged instantly. If you choose to pay by another option, you will be confirmed once we receive your payment.

If you have any questions or are unable to register please e-mail: johnsonp@ucar.edu.
