2012 Tutorial Overview

The Third Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) Data Assimilation System Community Tutorial (August 21-23) will be offered at the NCAR Foothills Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado.

The GSI Community Tutorial, consisting of both lectures and hands-on practical sessions, will be held August 21-23, 2012. The lecturers are invited from various GSI development/support teams including NCEP/EMC, NASA/GMAO, NOAA/GSD, NCAR/MMM and DTC. The practical sessions will provide essential skills to run GSI system with basic and advanced implementations.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of atmospheric science and numerical modeling, as well as Fortran and Unix, is required for the class. This tutorial will focus on running GSI in regional applications coupled with WRF-NMM or WRF-ARW. Some input data generated from the WRF model will be used. The hands on tutorial will not provide basic WRF training; therefore all participants are encouraged to have knowledge of the WRF model.

Available Spaces

There is no limitation on the registration for the tutorial lecture only option. However, due to the constraints of physical space and computers, registration for the tutorial with both lecture and practical sessions will be limited to 40.

Registration & Payment

The full tutorial consists of a combination of classroom lectures and a hands on practical session. One may register for either the whole tutorial, or just the lectures.

  • Tutorial: $300 (includes lunch and refreshments for three days)
  • Tutorial Lecture only (no practical session): $150 (includes lunch and refreshments)
  • Webcast Option: $150 (Remote participation/dial in information will be provided at a later date to these participants only)

Since multiple people may share the same remote access, we would like to get an accurate head-account of the remote participants so that we can prepare our presentation materials accordingly. Therefore, please register as well even if you are not the primary participant (who pays for the service), and indicate the name of the primary participant during the registration.

No refunds for cancellations made after July 16, 2012.

If you have any questions or are unable to register please e-mail: johnsonp@ucar.edu.
